It is impossible that anything so natural, so necessary, and so universal as death, should ever have been designed by Providence as an evil to mankind. AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF LADY EUNICE OKOYE LSC
Nov. 1942 – Feb. 2008
My maiden name is Eunice Ifeoma Nma Okeke, born on 23rd November 1942 to the family of Mr. Reuben Oraegbunam and Beatrice Chinanu Okeke of Ezi village in Abba town of present day Njikoka LGA of Anambra State, Nigeria.
I had my education at St Augustine’s School Abba and St. Mary’s Ukpo. After school in 1957, I taught at Emmanuel School, Ukwullu.
During one of the Christmas vacations, I met one handsome man, Mr. John Okoye, from Ifite Awkuzu, who later became my husband. After our traditional marriage in November 1958, on 3rd December we left for his place in Umuahia where he was and still is a businessman. We had our church wedding on the 27th of February 1960 in St. Stephens Anglican Church Umuahia.
We were blessed with our first child and thereafter with six other children (altogether: 3 girls and 4 boys). I, however, lost two of them to death. The deaths of my two children were so painful that on each occasion I thought the world had come to an end. I remained faithful to the almighty God.
I’ve served God from my early life, having been brought up by very strict Christian parents. In addition to my membership of the Choir and the Youth wing during my early life in my parents’ house, after marriage, I didn’t relent in the services of the church of Christ. I played active roles in my membership of the following:
- Member of the Mothers Union from 1960 to date
- Secretary Awkuzu Women Meeting Umuahia 1960 to 1985
- Secretary, Onitsha Divisional Union Meeting Umuahia 1961 to 1986
- Secretary of the Mothers Union 1961 to 1985
- Synod delegate Diocese of Aba 1985 – 1993
- Vice Secretary Diocesan Women Conference Aba Diocese 1985 to 1993
- Secretary General Awkuzu Women Home/abroad Meeting
- Ordained a Lay reader 1987
- Ordained Lady of St. Christopher 1993
- Archdeaconry Treasurer 1999 to date
- Archdeaconry Lay Readers Treasurer 1990 to date
- Awarded Cathedral Nne Oma 2000
- Synod delegate St. Stephens Cathedral, Umuahia 2001 to date
